Starting a cafe was a dream I nurtured while working in Beijing as an early education teacher. Due to the pandemic, I had no choice but to go back to Philippines and work on my dream. Today, as a proud cafe owner, I want to share some key insights to help you turn your own dream into reality.
Whether you’re currently employed, an overseas filipino worker, or have quit your job to start this journey, here are three insider secrets I wish I knew before starting my own cafe.
1. Understand Your Market
Before I opened Big Bang Coffee, I spent a little time getting to know my future customers. Don’t make the same mistake. Understanding the market is crucial. Who lives in the area? What do they like? Are there other cafes around, and what makes them popular or unpopular?
Knowing your market helps you tailor your offerings to meet the needs and preferences of your potential customers.
Action step:
Spend your weekends visiting local cafes. Observe what works and what doesn’t. Take notes on the crowd, the menu, the ambience. This will give your a clearer picture of what your future customers might want.
2. Budget Wisely
Starting a cafe can be costly, and expenses can quickly add up. I learned this firsthand when I was setting up Big Bang Coffee. From renting a space to buying equipment and ingredients, the initial investment is significant. It’s essential to have a detailed budget and stick to it. Unexpected costs will inevitably arise, so having a financial cushion is vital.
Action Step:
Create a comprehensive budget that includes all potential expenses from major items like rent and equipment to smaller costs like marketing and utilities. Aim to have at least six months’ worth of operating expenses saved up (I wish I did) to cover you as your business gets off the ground.
3. Focus on Quality and Service
In the cafe business, quality and service are everything. Customers come back not just for great coffee and delicious pastries but also for the experience. Friendly, prompt service and a welcoming atmosphere can make all the difference. I invested in good training for my staff and ensured that quality was always a top priority.
Action Step:
Before opening, hire and train staff who share your vision for the cafe. Emphasize the importance of customer service and quality. Consider running a soft opening to get feedback and make necessary adjustments before the grand opening.
Final Thoughts
Starting a cafe is an exciting venture, but it requires careful planning and execution. By understanding your market, budgeting wisely, and focusing on quality and service, you’ll be well on your way to creating a successful and beloved cafe. Remember, the journey will have its challenges, but with passion and persistence, you can turn your dream into reality.
